This week we’ll be looking at the town of Surfside Beach—South Carolina’s Family Friendly Beach!

History

First known as Roach’s Beach, the area that is now known as Surfside Beach was originally home to only one two-story building and several cottages. During the early 1920s, the entire region was purchased by a wealthy investor named George J. Holiday. At the time the region was purchased, the Roach Beach’s only principal industries were lumber and feed farming for the region’s few horses and mules. Holiday renamed the area Floral Beach after his wife, Flora, and daughter, Floramay.

By the early 1950s, the area had again changed hands and was renamed Surfside Beach. The undeveloped beach area was covered with sand dunes and a one-lane sandy road that led from the highway to a quiet, family beach.

In 1964, the town of Surfside Beach was officially incorporated.

Attractions

Known as “The Family Friendly Beach”, Surfside Beach is home to a myriad of shops, restaurants, and family-friendly attractions.

Beyond the beach, one of the town’s most popular attractions is the Wild Water and Wheels Water Park and Go-Kart Track. The sixteen-acre park offers more than thirty-three exciting rides, including high-speed flumes, a wipeout wave pool, waterfalls, a water playground for kids, a lazy river, and more.

Life in Surfside Beach revolves around the water. Surfing, kayaking, and parasailing are all popular past times for Surfside Beach natives. For those looking to while away the hours casting a line, the historic Surfside Pier offers stunning views of the beach as well as a full-service bait and tackle shop.

Looking for a little less surf and a little more turf? Not to worry, Surfside Beach is surrounded by an endless assortment of award-winning golf courses; including Indigo Creek Golf Club, International Club, and Litchfield Country Club.
