The Grumpy Monk: Craft Beer, Sushi, Entertainment and More!

Broadway at the Beach is home to the second Grumpy Monk Restaurant in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  The first location is at Carolina Forest, 4545 Highway 501, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  The Grumpy Monk is a local favorite and known for serving fresh sushi, quality food and 60 craft draft beers, including 10 rotating taps from beers brewed around the Carolinas.  KevinP likes the great food and huge beer selection:

“More beer than I could try, and I went here three times during my vacation. The food ranges from sushi to burgers and everything in between. Great place to get some food the whole family will enjoy while You explore the beauty of beer. I love this place.”

The Grumpy Monk serves lunch and dinner with a daily happy hour and a variety of weekly promotions and events.  It also features a bottle shop with unique, hard to find craft beer offerings from all over the United States.

The Broadway at the Beach location offers the same menu as the Carolina Forest location which includes vegan and vegetarian menu items along with a 120-seat beer garden that will sit on the water.  The inside of the restaurant will resemble a spin on the industrial trend with accent of New Orleans as well as a stage to serve as a music venue.   Colts_fan_08 was pleasantly surprised by the similarities in the menu prices at both locations:

“We are frequent visitors to the original grumpy monk and were amazed that the new location has identical pricing as the original. We thought that the broadway at the beach location would require higher pricing. What a pleasant surprise. The food quality is very good and the beer selection is outstanding!! There is a beer for every taste. Both the bar and wait staff are knowledgeable enough to guide to beer comparable to your taste. Friendly courteous staff. The pint glasses have witty comical sayings on them.”

The Broadway location, like the Carolina Forest location, also has a waterfall made from old tap handles.  The décor uses stacked aged barrels in the dining area and the tall walls allow for over two dozen screens to rest comfortably and provide an open feel to the restaurant.  The guests can sit at a wooden table inside or outside by the water.

The Carolina Forest location is the parent restaurant with a second restaurant in Monroe, North Carolina.  The Broadway at the Beach location is the third of the Grumpy Monk locations.  All three of the restaurants focus on serving quality meals that are as locally sourced as possible, from the entrees to the taps.  The servers are also well-trained and knowledgeable about both the food and the Grumpy Monk beer list.  Michaelanchia2992 feel they are the best in Myrtle Beach:

“We visit this Grumpy Monk at least once a week. Staff is awesome and very friendly; my 5 year old boy loves the interaction and the attention they give him, it is a big deal for us to have our kids feel welcome. Oscar (the sushi chef), is the best sushi guy in the whole State.  The beer

selection is great, I order beers I can only find when I travel outside SC.  I definitely recommend this restaurant to family and friends all year around.”

The Grumpy Monk also serves Angus burgers and sandwiches that come with beer suggestions along with the option of Grumpy Monk gluten-free buns.  Some of the more interesting Monk fare are the restaurant’s version of jalapeno poppers named Monk Turds and the Sea Shrooms, a savory appetizer of mushrooms stuffed with lump crab mix.

The sushi menu also has some very interesting options such as the I-Roll, the Grumpy Seafood Fiesta roll or the Taste of Explosion roll which is a tasty combination of ribeye bacon, cheese, jalapeno and avocado wrapped in rice and seaweed, then topped with thin slices of filet mignon, spicy mayo, and eel sauce.  Jaimievj79 gives them an A+++++across the board:

“A+++++ across the board. Very friendly staff starting with the hosts, to our wonderful bartenders Amy, Greg and Paul. This was my first time visiting the Grumpy Monk Bway but it was definitely worth the wait. Great food, awesome prices but the best was the attentive service of the bartenders. Also try and find the hidden Buffalo Bills logo inside the restaurant, (hint its spray painted black)”

The Grumpy Monk has built a reputation for a great selection of beer, delicious food, and friendly service with great Grumpy Monk reviews. They also have live music Thursdays through Saturdays.  Sounds like a great place to give a try.  Maybe we will see you there!
