Get to Know the Grand Strand: Pawleys Island, SC

It’s the quintessential American Dream. You work and you save your entire life, so that one day you can buy you own beach front paradise. With a pleasant year-round climate, abundant natural beauty, an incredibly low cost of living and a booming real estate market, the Grand Strand is an incredible place to call home.

Don’t just take our word for it though. The statistics speak for themselves. In fact, for the past three years the Myrtle Beach/Conway/North Myrtle Beach area has been the fastest growing metropolitan area in South Carolina and the second fastest growing community in the United States.

With so many people looking to relocate to the area from across the world, it’s only understandable that many are not entirely familiar with the different townships and communities that make up the Grand Strand. Fortunately, your real estate experts at Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Elliott Coastal Living are here. With local insight into the history, attractions and real estate offerings of the Grand Strand, prospective home buyers can begin to feel a little bit more at home in their new community.

This week, we will be taking an in depth look at the winsome town of Pawleys Island.

History

Pawleys Island was first settled the early 1700s by the families of rice planters who owned plantations near the Grand Strand’s various rivers. During the warm summer months, these rivers would come alive with mosquitoes and others disease carrying insects. These insects made plantation life exceedingly unhealthy and unpleasant. To protect their family’s health, planters would move their family members, livestock and provisions to the much healthier seashore climate of Pawleys Island every May. As a result, Pawleys Island has come to be known as “America’s Oldest Summer Resort”. Today, the quaint little town remains a favorite summer hideaway for many families the world over.

Attractions

Situated just a short drive from both Charleston and Myrtle Beach, the island’s residents can enjoy the quiet charm of a small town without having to sacrifice the modern conveniences of a larger city.

Pawleys Island is known for its laid-back lifestyle, which includes crabbing in the adjacent creeks, telling ghost stories under pale moonlight and lounging lazily in the warm, southern sun on the island’s pristine stretch of wide-open beach. Just a few minutes from the town center, residents will find the pristine Huntington Beach State Park as well as the verdant fields of Brookgreen Gardens. The island’s natural beauty makes it a golfer’s haven. The small community is home to several of the Grand Strand’s most popular golf courses, including Caledonia Golf and Fish Club, the Founders Golf Club and the Heritage Golf Club.

Real Estate

In addition to various entertainment options and plentiful small-town charm, Pawleys Island homeowners enjoy one of the best resale appreciation rates of any Grand Strand community. Since 2000, the appreciation rate has grown annually by 2.73%.
