This week we are looking at the charming hamlet of Little River, SC.

History

Little River is one of the oldest settlements along the coast. The name Little River originated with the land’s indigenous inhabitants, who called the region “Mineola”, meaning “Little River”. As early as the 1600’s, European fisherman and farmers started establishing homesteads in the area. The area’s natural harbor made Little River a haven for pirates and privateers during the settlement’s formative years. In fact, many of the most infamous buccaneers from the Golden Age of Piracy, including Captain Kidd, Calico Jack, Anne Bonny and Blackbeard, are all part of the area’s rich local lore. In 1936, Little River became part of the Intracoastal Waterway. To this day, the waterway remains one of the town’s most important features.

Attractions

Don’t let the small-town charm fool you, Little River is one of the liveliest sections of the Grand Strand. With countless water-based attractions, gourmet restaurants, award-winning golf courses and festivals, entertainment abounds in this cozy coastal town.

One of the area’s most popular draws is the world-famous Little River Blue Crab Festival. Every May the streets of this quiet town come alive with festive beach music and fresh local seafood during one of the largest festivals in the Southeast. For more than eight consecutive years, the Little River Blue Crab Festival has been named the Best Annual Event/Festival on the Grand Strand by readers of the Sun News newspaper. This is a can’t miss event for anyone living in the Grand Strand.

Beyond the Blue Crab Festival, the town boasts a wide assortment of activities and attractions. Enjoy a guided jet ski tour of the Carolina coast from Little River Water Sports.
