Georgetown Named One America’s Best Small Coastal Towns

For the third year in a row, USA Today has named Georgetown, SC, to its illustrious list of the 10 Best Coastal Small Towns in America.

USA Today asked readers to vote from 20 nominees for Best Coastal Small Town, chosen by a panel of experts, which include editors from USA Today, editors from 10Best.com, as well as expert travel contributors. All voting was digital and allowed people to vote once a day for four weeks.
Georgetown ranked 7th in this year’s list. Chincoteague, VA, took the top spot in this year’s ranking. Georgetown was the only town in South Carolina to be named to the top 10 list.

“For three years in a row, Georgetown has finished in the top 10 for this prestigious, highly sought-after award,” said Mark A. Stevens, Director of Tourism Development for the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce. “We are proud, year after year, to earn our designation as a Best Coastal Small-Town nominee. Georgetown is a shining star here on South Carolina’s Hammock Coast.”

Get to Know Georgetown

While it is a great honor to be named to this illustrious list, it is far from a surprise to anyone who knows this enchanting coastal gem.

Georgetown is the third oldest town in South Carolina. In 1791, Georgetown served as the southernmost stop on President Washington’s Southern Tour.

Nestled on the banks of Winyah Bay, Downtown Georgetown is home to an endless parade of delectable seafood restaurants, boutique shops, and gorgeous waterfront views from the easily navigable and handicapped-accessible, Harborwalk.

In addition to numerous historical sites and a charming waterfront, Georgetown is also home to the Yawkee Wildlife Center. Left to the state of South Carolina by the late Boston Redsox owner, Thomas Yawkee, the Yawkee Wildlife Center is a 24,000-acre wildlife preserve consisting of pristine marshland, upland longleaf pine forests, maritime forests, and beaches.

Whether you’re a history buff looking to explore the city’s various museums and historical sites or an environmentalist looking to lose yourself in the natural beauty of the low country, this coastal gem has something for everyone.
