Five Easy Kitchen Upgrades to Try This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away! That means in less than two weeks, your kitchen is going be jam-packed with family, friends, and general acquaintances just looking for a good meal. This also means that, in less than two weeks, your outdated kitchen is going to become the central focal point of your house.

Don’t panic! There is still time to brighten up your kitchen without having to spend too much of your hard-earned money. Check out these five easy and cost-effective upgrades to get your kitchen ready for Turkey Day!

Cabinets

The first—and perhaps most impactful—upgrade you can make to your kitchen is to change up your kitchen’s cabinets. From adding a fresh coat of paint to changing out your existing pulls, there are a million different ways you can change the appearance of your kitchen just by making a change to your kitchen’s cabinets.

One of the simplest changes you can make is to simply remove your upper kitchen cabinet doors altogether to transform your cabinets into lovely open shelves. This simple cosmetic change is easy to make, inexpensive, and will create a lovely open-air vibe without the hassle of having to rip down any of your existing cabinetry. It’s even a great solution for renters, as you can remove the cabinet doors, store them out of the way, then put them back on when it’s time to move.

Backsplash

Another quick and easy way to make any kitchen pop is by creating a new backsplash.

If you’ve got the budget, and the DIY skills, retiling your backsplash is a great way to add color and texture to any kitchen. For those of you out there looking for something easier, and less permanent, simply apply a stylish tile decal. Many decals are cheap—less than $25—and easy to remove should you ever have to move.

Whatever backsplash upgrade you choose to make, just be sure to use a timeless material or design that will complement your kitchen’s cabinetry and décor.

Lighting

Nothing dates a kitchen quite like an antiquated lighting fixture. Many older home designs relied heavily on harsh fluorescent lighting boxes that did little to brighten or beautify the home.

Fortunately, lighting changes are easy to make and are relatively inexpensive. To transform your out-of-date kitchen into a contemporary gem, pick out a lovely hanging pendant lighting fixture or modern chandelier.

Once you make the change, you’ll find that the right lighting fixture can tie any room together.

Storage

Is a lack of space hampering your ability to entertain? One of the most useful kitchen upgrades any homeowner or renter can make is the creation of additional storage space.

Use items that you might not normally expect to find in a kitchen, such as a shelf or a bookcase. Not only will these items add valuable storage space to your kitchen, but they will also add a coolness factor that is all your own.

If you have an empty wall, you can also increase your kitchen’s storage space with stylish floating shelves. Floating shelves are easy to install and are sold by most home décor retailers, including IKEA and Pottery Barn.

Furnishings and Décor

Last, but by no means least, change the appearance of your kitchen by simply changing its furnishings and décor.

Add a splash of color by laying down a new area rug or trade-out your old kitchen table and chairs for something new and exciting. Depending on how much space you have, you might even be able to convert an existing table or piece of furniture into a makeshift kitchen island.

Even something as simple as fresh flowers or a new potted plant can completely change how you feel about your kitchen.
